Strength Beyond Years: Elizabeth’s Story
Elizabeth began treatment right away, but it wasn’t easy. Just eight days into chemotherapy, she developed a serious fungal infection on her arm. The doctors worked tirelessly to keep her safe, and by God’s grace, she pushed through.
For a time, we thought we were through the worst. But when Elizabeth was five years old, just five months off treatment, she relapsed — this time into her central nervous system. I’ll never forget the moment she grabbed her head in pain, tears streaming down her face, and said, “Grandma, I can’t see. Something is strange.” That was when we learned the cancer had returned in her brain.
Elizabeth endured radiation, a bone marrow transplant, and years of physical and occupational therapy. The road was long, and there were many setbacks. The treatments saved her life, but they also left their mark. She has faced memory challenges, learning difficulties, and ongoing health concerns with her liver, kidneys, and heart. She has also endured painful procedures, surgeries, and countless doctor visits.
And yet, here’s the miracle. Through it all, Elizabeth has shown extraordinary courage and grit. She graduated from high school in 2020, during COVID, missing prom and a traditional graduation. But she didn’t let that stop her. She enrolled at Lone Star College, where she continues to push forward, even when math and testing barriers try to stand in her way.
Today, Elizabeth is a thriving young woman. She still carries the scars of treatment, but she also carries an incredible story of survival and strength. She’s gentle, determined, and full of hope. She may not see herself as tough, but I can promise you, she is tougher than most adults I know.
As her grandmother, I couldn’t be prouder. Elizabeth is living proof that childhood cancer may change the course of life, but it does not have the power to take away courage, perseverance, or the joy of moving forward one step at a time.
We are so grateful for His Grace Foundation, Texas Children’s Hospital, and every person who has walked alongside us in this journey. Their support has helped carry us through the hardest moments and continues to remind us that we are not alone.
Elizabeth is our miracle. And this is her story.
