Volunteer Stories
Hear from the volunteers who help make our mission possible.
1. Tell me about the moment you knew you wanted to be a volunteer with His Grace Foundation? His Grace Foundation was one of the new philanthropies my daughter’s National Charity League group supported. Cia & I loved working with children, so we started volunteering by providing wish list supplies for BMT patients and we enjoyed every minute of it. Our NCL chapter went on to do a DVD/CD drive to establish the Movie Library on the BMTU! 2. What do you love most about volunteering with HGF? I love volunteering with His Grace Foundation because of their can-do attitude and the positivity that is always there. No request or need for a child and their family is ever too large to handle. 3. Is there a specific story (or moment) that comes to mind through your volunteering that you know you will never be able to forget? I’ve always done behind-the-scenes style volunteering with HGF — financial support and shopping for wishlists, etc. When Val invited me to join the Board of Directors this summer, I knew that was the moment to step from behind the scenes to the forefront and really make a difference. Sometimes you just [...]
When the HGF team thinks 'superstar volunteer' we think Sarah Langston. Her attention to detail and attitude of excellence and care for each project she takes on comes from a place of deep understanding as her son, Owen, was admitted to the BMTU in 2017. Now, he's a regular at the HGF Golf Tournament each year! -- What does it mean to you to be a HGF volunteer? When Owen was diagnosed with brain cancer I asked God for two things. For Owen to be healed, and for God to show me how to help...how to make such an awful scenario better. We are four years off treatment and I am not finished helping. What are your favorite volunteer tasks? Assembling Welcome Baskets! Although, I did enjoy assembling the April Fools' goodie bags because Owen would have enjoyed pranking his nurse friends during his time on the BMTU. Why are HGF volunteers so important? Happy moments are hard to come by when you're living through trauma. Kindness from strangers not only helps break the sadness, even if only briefly, but also fills you with hope that you can make it through. People blessing our family made me hopeful some [...]
Not only is Allie a RN on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit & BMT Clinic at Texas Children’s Hospital, she and her husband, Zach, also volunteer with His Grace Foundation! We are so grateful to Allie for the way she serves each patient with excellence. We’re celebrating her, and her incredible colleagues, during this special week! Tell us a little bit about how you learned of HGF. Why are the services they offer so important, especially to the patients of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit? I first learned about HGF when I first started working on the BMTU about 4 years ago and was immediately inspired by their mission. My favorite thing about HGF is that it was founded by a family who has experienced the journey of being treated at Texas Children’s. Because of this, HGF has such a special way of anticipating and caring for not only physical, tangible needs of the patients and their families, but also their mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. What was your favorite thing about your job? My favorite thing about my job is the privilege I have to interact with and walk alongside these amazing kids and their families. I absolutely [...]
